Hughes Valmond, principal of J.C. Parks Elementary School, began his career in education in Virginia working with students with special needs. He then transitioned to a role as a school counselor, gaining experience in alternative settings, middle schools and high schools. His leadership journey continued as he became an assistant principal in the Midwest, later serving as an interim principal, and eventually taking on the role of principal.

During his time as principal, he used a data-driven model where students controlled the learning within the classroom, resulting in a significant increase in literacy scores in a short period.

Valmond is a graduate of Norfolk State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology and a master's degree in professional school counseling. He furthered his education by obtaining a school administration degree from Cambridge College.

His educational philosophy centers on preparing students for future jobs and careers, equipping them to navigate and succeed in an increasingly complex world. Valmond is excited to collaborate with the dedicated staff and community stakeholders to make J.C. Parks one of the best schools in the state.
